Family photos with young kids don’t have to feel overwhelming. As a mom of two, a former educator, and a lifestyle photographer, I’ve learned that the most beautiful images happen when kids feel comfortable and totally themselves. If you’re planning a family session in Charleston, Moncks Corner, or anywhere in the Lowcountry, these simple tips will help create a stress-free and joyful experience for the whole family.

1. Prepare Outfits Ahead of Time (and Choose Comfortable Shoes!)

Outfits are often the biggest stress point for parents, so planning a few days ahead really helps. Choose soft, breathable clothing in neutral or earthy tones that let kids move freely. Textures, layers, and coordinating colors photograph beautifully — and comfort always makes kids happier.

Don’t forget the shoes!

Kids need comfortable footwear, especially for longer sessions where we walk to different backgrounds or they’re running around and playing. Comfy shoes keep their energy high and help the session feel fun rather than tiring.

It’s designed to make choosing outfits simple, stress-free, and actually fun.

A well-styled family elevates your entire gallery and helps everything feel cohesive, timeless, and polished.

Pro Tip: Lay everything out the night before — outfits, accessories, backups, and shoes — so the day of your session feels smooth and relaxed.

2. Give Yourself Extra Time & Let Kids Adjust to the Environment

No one enjoys rushing — especially little ones. Starting the getting-ready process earlier and arriving ahead of your session time makes a huge difference.

When you show up early, kids have a chance to explore, warm up, and get comfortable with the surroundings. Whether we're at Azalea Park, Wannamaker Park, Ashley River Park, or any of my favorite Charleston and Moncks Corner locations, that extra time helps them settle in and feel ready to start.

Kids are naturally curious. If we jump straight into photos the moment we arrive, they may eager to check out their surroundings — which can make them want to rush through pictures. Exploring first helps them relax.

A note about playgrounds:

If the location has a play area, saving it as a “reward” after photos is usually best. Playing beforehand can make it harder for them to leave — or tire them out before we even begin.

3. Let Your Kids Be Kids — I Promise, It’s Okay

As a mom, I know firsthand that little ones rarely sit still or smile on command. My own kids keep me moving, so I never expect perfect posing from yours.

It can be tempting to want the traditional photo where everyone is standing still and smiling. And don’t worry — we will absolutely work toward capturing that classic shot.

But your favorite images might end up being the ones you didn’t expect:

You holding your baby…

Your toddler looking up at you like you’re their whole world…

Your kids laughing, exploring, or simply being themselves.

Those moments tell the real story of your family.

And I’m here to capture you — the mom, dad, or person who means everything to your little ones — interacting with your whole world.

Natural connection always photographs more beautifully than forced smiles. When you let your kids be kids, the magic happens.

4. Bring Simple Snacks, Bubbles, and Their Favorite Comfort Items

Little ones get hangry quickly — and honestly, so do adults! Bringing a few small snacks can make a huge difference. Food makes everyone happier and is an easy way to redirect or gently bribe when needed. Aim for clean, mess-free options to keep outfits photo-ready.

Bubbles are always a huge hit.

Kids light up when they see them, and bubbles look gorgeous floating through sunlight in photos. They’re fun, calming, and give little hands something exciting to do.

If your child has a favorite toy, blanket, or paci, please don’t feel like it will clash with the photos. Those comfort items are part of who they are right now. Years from now, you’ll cherish having images that include the things they once carried with them everywhere.

Comfort creates confidence — and confidence creates the best photos.

5. Trust the Process — And Know That I’m Here to Support Your Child Fully

Parents know their children better than anyone, and your insight helps me create a session that feels comfortable, fun, and tailored to your little one’s personality. I’m always happy to work with you, communicate openly, and adjust based on what your child needs.

I love child-led sessions.

When kids guide the pace or show me what excites them, the photos become so much more authentic. If there’s something important about your child’s personality — their interests, boundaries, comfort level — sharing that ahead of time helps the experience flow smoothly.

I want every family to feel seen, supported, and respected.

If your child has a disability or specific needs, letting me know beforehand helps me approach the session thoughtfully and adapt in ways that make them feel comfortable. My goal is always to create a welcoming environment where every child can enjoy the experience and look forward to future sessions.

Every child deserves to feel celebrated in front of the camera. I’m here to meet them exactly where they are.

Bonus Tip: Make the Camera Less Scary (Let Kids Explore!)

One of my favorite behind-the-scenes moments is letting kids peek through my camera or take a quick photo themselves. It transforms the camera from something big and intimidating into something exciting and fun.

Kids love feeling included, and giving them a “job” helps build instant trust. Once the camera feels familiar, their personalities open up — smiles become real, curiosity takes over, and the whole experience feels magical for them.

Exploring little minds is one of the best parts of what I do, and I love watching kids gain confidence during our session.
