If you're considering a Cypress Gardens boat session, you're probably wondering what makes this location so special and what to expect when planning your visit. From the iconic filming location of The Notebook to navigating the boat reservations and choosing the best time of year, there's a little more to know than simply showing up with your camera. In this guide, I'll walk you through everything you need to know before booking a Cypress Gardens photo session, along with the insider tips I've learned after photographing couples and growing families here.
Was The Notebook Really Filmed at Cypress Gardens?
Yes! The famous rowboat scene from The Notebook was filmed right here at Cypress Gardens in Moncks Corner, South Carolina, making it one of the most recognizable filming locations in the state.
One of the biggest surprises for visitors is that the swans weren't actually part of the gardens. They were brought in specifically for filming, so while you won't find hundreds of swans gliding across the water today, you'll experience the very same cypress-lined waterways that made the scene so unforgettable.
Instead of swans, keep an eye out for wood ducks, turtles, ospreys, song birds, and other native wildlife throughout the gardens. During the warmer months, you'll often see lily pads covering the water, and it's not uncommon to spot an alligator or two relaxing along the second half of the boat trail.
Planning Your Cypress Gardens Boat Session
Planning ahead is one of the biggest keys to having a smooth Cypress Gardens photo session. While the gardens are open throughout the week, I schedule all boat sessions on weekday mornings to give my clients the best experience possible.
The park opens at 9:00 AM, but I recommend arriving around 8:45 AM so you're among the first cars waiting at the entrance. Once the gates open, you'll drive through the ticket booth where admission is $10 per person, and your rowboat rental is included with your admission. From there, everyone heads straight to reserve a boat. During the busy summer months, arriving even a little later can mean waiting two to four hours before a boat becomes available. Getting there early allows us to begin your session right away while the gardens are quieter and the morning temperatures are still comfortable.
Each season offers something a little different at Cypress Gardens. Spring is one of my favorite times to photograph here, with comfortable weather, fresh greenery, and beautiful seasonal blooms throughout the gardens. Summer brings lush green cypress trees, vibrant lily pads, and the fullest scenery, but it's also the hottest and busiest season with visitors traveling from all over to experience the famous boat trail. Fall offers cooler temperatures while keeping much of the landscape green. Winter is the quietest season, with fewer visitors, shorter boat waits, and more space to enjoy the waterways without weaving around other boats. While the cypress trees aren't as vibrant during the winter months, the peaceful atmosphere can make for an equally beautiful experience.

Cypress Gardens Through the Seasons

What to Expect During Your Cypress Gardens Photo Session
Before your session begins, I'll reserve a rowboat so everything is ready when you arrive. We'll meet at the boat dock, just a short walk from the entrance, and after a quick introduction, you'll climb aboard and begin your journey through the cypress-lined waterways.
For my standard boat session, I photograph from the walking trail while guiding you through the experience. As you paddle toward the first bridge, we'll make a couple of planned stops along the way for portraits surrounded by the towering cypress trees and lily pads. Once you reach the bridge, I'll photograph you from both sides as you paddle underneath, creating a beautiful variety of backgrounds and some of my favorite, more creative images. Afterward, you'll paddle back toward the dock while I capture a few final scenic images along the way. This experience focuses entirely on the boat portion of the gardens.
If you choose the optional Signature Coverage Upgrade, the experience becomes even more immersive. While a second photographer remains on the walking trail capturing the classic bridge images, I'll join you in the boat. This allows us to continue beyond the first bridge, photograph at the iconic white arched bridge, complete the full boat loop, and create images from perspectives that simply aren't possible from land. Once we're back on shore, we'll also explore a few of my favorite spots throughout the gardens for additional portraits beyond the boat trail.

Both Sessions will start at the boat dock and follow the blue route. The upgrade continues with the pink route.
Add a Personal Touch with Florals
One of my favorite ways to elevate a Cypress Gardens boat session is by adding florals. Every session includes access to my faux floral boat arrangement and a vintage white lace umbrella at no additional cost, both of which photograph beautifully against the cypress trees and waterways.
If you've been dreaming of fresh flowers, you're welcome to bring your own bouquet or arrangement. I also love recommending Rashelle. We've worked together on both a styled session and a client session, and her floral designs are always beautiful and thoughtfully created. If you'd like to add fresh florals to your Cypress Gardens session, I highly recommend reaching out to her!

What to Wear for Your Cypress Gardens Session
The romantic scenery at Cypress Gardens pairs beautifully with soft, timeless outfits. One of the most popular looks is a flowy white or ivory dress, especially for maternity and couples sessions, as it complements the dreamy feel of the cypress trees and waterways. Lace details and lightweight fabrics add beautiful movement while you're out on the boat.
For partners, I typically recommend a white, cream, or neutral button-down paired with khaki or light tan pants for a classic, coordinated look. If white isn't your style, soft neutrals, earthy tones, sage greens, dusty blues, and warm browns also photograph beautifully against the lush scenery.
Since you'll be walking a short distance to the dock and stepping in and out of a rowboat, comfortable shoes are always a good idea. Once your session is booked, you'll receive my complete Style Guide with outfit inspiration, coordinating color palettes, and additional styling tips to help you choose the perfect look for your Cypress Gardens session.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do we have to paddle the boat ourselves?
Yes! Both people in the boat will help paddle, but don't worry, the waterways are calm and easy to navigate. I'll guide you the entire time, including where to paddle and how to position the boat. (My pregnant mamas have already done enough work, so I'll usually recruit their partner to make the little adjustments😉)
Will we get wet?
Maybe just a little! Water will naturally drip from the paddles into the boat, so the bottom of dresses can get damp. If you're up for some of the more creative poses, expect to get a little wetter.
What happens if it rains?
If the weather isn't ideal, we'll simply reschedule. Wind is usually the biggest challenge since it makes it difficult to position the boat for photos.
When should I book?
I recommend booking as early as possible, especially for spring and fall. Maternity sessions are best scheduled between 28–32 weeks, and if you need your photos by a certain date, keep in mind that sneak peeks are delivered within 72 hours and full galleries within 2–3 weeks.
Can children ride in the boats?
Yes! Children of all ages are welcome. Children under 12 are required to wear a life jacket while the boat is moving, and many families choose to remove them briefly for portraits once the boat is safely stopped.
Who is this session best for?
Cypress Gardens is one of my favorite locations for couples, engagements, anniversaries, and maternity sessions. While families are always welcome, the boat experience is especially romantic and best enjoyed with just the two of you.
