What to Wear for Family Photos in Charleston
When people book a session with me, one of the first questions I get is, "What should we wear?"
I get it. Outfits can be stressful, especially when you're trying to coordinate multiple people without looking too matchy or wondering if something will photograph well.
The good thing is, it doesn't have to be complicated. A few simple choices can make a huge difference in how your photos look, and I'm going to share 7 of my biggest tips to help you get started.
1. Start with One Outfit You Love
Don't try to shop for everyone all at once. It usually ends with five tabs open, a shopping cart full of clothes, and no idea if anything actually goes together.
Instead, choose one outfit you absolutely love and build from there. For family sessions, I usually recommend starting with mom's outfit since it tends to have the most color, texture, or movement. Once you have that piece picked out, coordinating everyone else becomes much easier.
2. Coordinate, Don't Match
Gone are the days of everyone wearing matching white shirts and blue jeans.
Instead of matching, aim to coordinate. Choose colors that complement each other without everyone wearing the exact same thing. Mixing different shades, textures, and tones creates a much more natural, timeless look while still making everyone feel like they belong together.
For example, instead of everyone wearing the same shade of blue, one person might wear a sage green dress, another a cream shirt, another tan pants, and another dusty blue. Everything works together without feeling too uniform.
The goal is for your family to look connected, not identical.
3. Choose Soft, Timeless Colors
The colors you choose can completely change the look and feel of your photos.
I always recommend sticking with soft neutrals, earthy tones, or light pastels because they photograph beautifully and keep the focus on you instead of your clothes. Colors like cream, beige, tan, sage, olive, dusty blue, muted pinks, and soft terracotta all work well in Charleston's natural landscapes.
I also recommend thinking about where your session will take place. You want your outfits to complement the scenery, not blend into it. For example, a cream dress looks beautiful against a marsh at sunset, while soft blues and sandy neutrals are perfect for the beach.
I usually avoid neon colors, bright graphics, or clothing that's much darker than everyone else's outfit. These tend to draw attention away from the people in the photo instead of adding to the overall look.
4. Choose Comfortable Clothing
One of the best things you can wear is something you feel comfortable and confident in.
If you're constantly adjusting a tight dress, pulling at your shirt, or worrying about a strap slipping, it's going to be much harder to relax and enjoy your session. The more comfortable you feel, the more natural your photos will look.
The same goes for dads and kids. If dad is uncomfortable or hates what he's wearing, chances are he won't be excited about taking photos. If little ones are wearing itchy clothes or outfits they can't comfortably run, climb, or play in, they're much more likely to become frustrated or overstimulated.
My sessions are full of movement. We'll be walking, cuddling, playing games, exploring, and chasing little ones. Choosing outfits that everyone can comfortably move in helps create genuine smiles and natural interactions instead of worrying about clothes the entire time.
Flowy dresses, breathable fabrics, and clothing that fits well without being too tight are always great choices. Your session should feel like spending quality time with your family, not worrying about what you're wearing.
5. Add Texture Instead of Busy Patterns
Texture is one of my favorite ways to add interest to an outfit without taking attention away from your family.
Think knit sweaters, linen, lace, or dresses with layers and movement. These details add depth and dimension to your photos while keeping the overall look timeless.
Patterns can work beautifully too, as long as they're used thoughtfully. Soft florals with plenty of spacing, thin stripes, or other subtle patterns photograph well. I recommend avoiding large, bold patterns, oversized graphics, or having multiple people wear plaid or busy prints. They can quickly become distracting and take the focus away from the people in the photo.
A good rule of thumb is to let one outfit be the statement piece while everyone else wears solids, textures, or subtle patterns that complement it.
6. Dress for the Location and Season
Choosing outfits that fit both the season and your location can make a big difference in how your photos look and how comfortable you feel.
Charleston summers are no joke. Lightweight, breathable fabrics are your best friend, especially if your session is outdoors. Linen, cotton, and flowy clothing will help keep you cooler than heavy fabrics or tight-fitting outfits. It's also worth keeping sweat in mind when choosing colors and fabrics. Some materials and colors hide it much better than others, helping you stay comfortable and confident throughout your session.
The cooler months bring a whole new opportunity for styling. Sweaters, jackets, cardigans, scarves, and layers don't just keep you warm, they add texture, depth, and a little extra sophistication to your photos. Layering also gives you more colors and textures to work with while still keeping everyone's outfits coordinated.
It's also helpful to think about the colors around you. For example, white and ivory can really stand out against the dark greens of a wooded park, while soft blues, sandy neutrals, and creams look beautiful at the beach. Choosing outfits that complement your surroundings helps create a gallery that feels balanced, timeless, and true to the season.
7. Let Your Outfits Reflect Your Personality
One of the biggest mistakes I see is people trying to dress like someone else because they think it's what they're supposed to wear for photos.
If you love flowy dresses, that's wonderful! But if dresses aren't your thing, don't feel like you have to wear one just because it's popular for family photos. I want your gallery to feel like you.
Your clothing is part of your story. It should reflect your personality while still feeling a little elevated for the occasion. Think of it as the nicest version of your everyday style, not a completely different version of yourself.
The same goes for your location. If your family loves the beach, let's go to the beach. If you're more drawn to downtown Charleston or a quiet park, we'll find a location that fits your style. When your outfits and your surroundings reflect who you are, your photos feel more authentic and become memories you'll love for years to come.
One piece of the story.
At the end of the day, your outfits are just one piece of the story.
The goal isn't to have the trendiest clothes or perfectly coordinated outfits. It's to create photos that feel like you. The way your family laughs together, the way your partner looks at you, the way your little ones run into your arms. That's what you'll remember years from now.
That's what connection over perfection means to me.
